Acceptable checks:
•For trust account check deposit requirements, see Check deposits to trust accounts below.
•Checks are deemed acceptable if any one of the following conditions is met.
The check must be:
•Made payable to the custodian.
•Made payable to the customer, exactly as the name and address of record appear on the customer’s brokerage account.
Important:
•Checks payable to the customer must be endorsed by the customer prior to being accepted for deposit.
•If two payees are listed as Mary Smith and John Smith:
o The check can be deposited only into a joint brokerage account owned by both individuals.
o Both payees must endorse the check.
•If two payees are listed as Mary Smith or John Smith:
o The check can be deposited into an individual brokerage account owned by either individual.
o Only the brokerage account owner must endorse the check.
•Initial checks received to establish a new account cannot be accepted if payable to the customer. These checks must be made payable to the custodian.
•No third party checks will be accepted.
o Third party checks are checks made payable by an individual or entity to an individual or entity, not listed on the account registration.
•No checks payable to Spire (or any of its affiliates) will be accepted for deposit to client accounts. Checks payable to Spire will be returned to the customer.
Unacceptable checks and cash-like instruments
The following items received for deposit are unacceptable:
•Checks made payable to Spire Investment Partners, Spire Securities, Spire Insurance Agency or Spire Wealth Management.
•Cash or coins
•Foreign checks, such as checks issued in a currency other than U. S. dollars (USD) or checks without a Federal Reserve recognized ABA number
•Check written in a language other than English
•Travelers' checks or money orders
•Checks made payable to anyone other than the custodian or the customer.
•A corporation, for deposit in an individual brokerage account (accept in the case of a retirement plan contribution by the employer)
Check deposits to trust accounts
ACCEPTABLE
- "Name of the Custodian" - FBO
- A trust listed on the account registration
- An individual designated as a trustee on a check and endorsed over to the trust.
- Note: If multiple trustees are listed on the account registration, a check is acceptable if it is payable to one of the trustees on the account and endorsed over to the trust.
- Note: The standard policy for third-party payees applies to trust accounts. See Acceptable checks for more information.
UNACCEPTABLE
- A trust not shown on the account registration
- A trust with the check showing a date of trust different than the date of trust on the account registration
